What people notice about you in the first 7 seconds

Whether in a corporate setting or on a romantic date, first impressions are super important. But, what many don’t realise is just how fast they actually form – sometimes before you even get a chance to speak. In less than 10 seconds of meeting you, people already begin making subconscious judgments about you, your confidence, energy and overall wellbeing.

Your eyes

The natural first place to look when meeting a person is, of course, the eyes. They reveal far more than we think: bright, open eyes suggest energy, confidence, attractiveness… Dark circles or puffy skin, on the other hand, are immediate signs of fatigue, stress and low mood.

While some of it is simply genetics, simple lifestyle adjustments can make a big impact on what your eye area looks like. For instance, long hours in front of screens, poor sleep, dehydration and excessive alcohol will all show up quickly in this area.

Skin quality

Your skin is another major thing people register almost immediately, even if they don’t consciously realise it. If your skin looks clear and well-cared-for, this tends to signal that you are in good health, while very dry or dull skin suggests fatigue or lack of self-care. Now, this doesn’t mean your skin must look perfect, but rather well-maintained.

All you need is a simple daily skincare routine that takes less than 5 minutes. Start by washing your face to get rid of any dirt or crustiness that accumulated overnight. Follow up with a moisturising cream (ideally one with SPF) to make your skin look hydrated and healthy. It’s also a good idea to incorporate an exfoliator once or twice a week, which will help get rid of blackheads or dead skin.

Don’t forget to look after the rest of your skin either, particularly during the colder months. Use a moisture repairing body cream regularly to keep your skin hydrated, with extra focus on areas that are the most exposed to the harsh weather conditions, like your hands or ankles.

Smile and lips

Your smile is one of the most powerful tools in creating a positive first impression as well as making people feel at ease. People instinctively trust those who appear warm and relaxed, with a friendly smile reassuring them. It doesn’t have to be exaggerated or constant, just a genuine expression that makes you seem approachable and confident.

In addition to the smile, your teeth and lips also play a role. Dry and cracked lips or neglected teeth can distract from an otherwise well-groomed appearance. So, simple habits like applying a lip balm during the colder months or maintaining good oral hygiene can make a noticeable difference in your first impressions.

Body language

Before you even introduce yourself, your body language is already communicating a message. Your posture, for one, is something people subconsciously judge instantly: if you’re slouching, you look insecure, but if you stand upright with relaxed shoulders, you’re radiating confidence.

Similarly, things like maintaining eye contact and open gestures (instead of crossed arms) are all cues of someone welcoming and engaged in the conversation. These things may not come naturally to everyone, but they can be easily learnt over time, with a little practice.

The impressions that linger

Although the first impressions form very quickly, they are not completely beyond your control. Even small improvements in your grooming or posture can significantly change how others perceive you from the moment you walk into the room.
