It seems unisex clothing is paving the way for the fashion world. Unisex clothing creates ambivalence, blurring boundaries between the types of clothes which are stereotypically worn by men or women. Some women have embraced the androgynous look such as Agyness Deyn who uses it to her advantage and creates an empowering style.
Rad Hourani is known for his unisex ready-to-wear clothing line, RAD, which was established in 2007. In 2013 the President of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, Didier Grumbach, invited him to debut his couture collection. It is evident that unisex clothing is making a mark in fashion world and Hourani made a bold statement in Spring/Summer 2014 couture collection as his models were all wearing masks, further signifying how his collection is gender neutral.
His collection embraced his typical style of organic folds, architectural designs and the typical monochrome pallet. His couture collection pushes the boundaries and complements his existing ready-to-wear line. Hourani’s understanding of the male and female bodies is prevalent in his collection and through this he manages to complement his garments for both genders.
Not only does Hourani make a political statement through his clothes but he believes his creations are ‘ageless, timeless and sexless. They don’t belong to any period of time and follow no trend. They speak on their own’.
