Nestled amidst the labyrinthine streets of Stone Town in Zanzibar, the Emerson Spice Hotel is a hidden gem that beckons travellers seeking a unique and enchanting experience. From the moment you step foot inside, you’re transported to a world of elegance, history, and unmatched hospitality.

As I checked into the Emerson Spice Hotel, I was greeted with warm smiles and a refreshing welcome drink, setting the tone for what promised to be an unforgettable stay. The hotel’s commitment to sustainability was evident from the start, as they proudly showcased their use of all-natural soaps sourced from local shops. It’s the little touches like these that truly elevate the guest experience.

Upon entering my room, I was delighted to find a charming room filled with character. Small but wonderful little touches like a box of ‘bits and bobs’, including everything from shavers to toothpaste and toothbrushes. It was a thoughtful gesture that ensured I had everything I needed for a comfortable stay. Each room at the Emerson Spice Hotel has its own unique name, adding to the sense of character and individuality that permeates throughout the property.

After an evening out, I returned to find the room turned down for the night, a luxurious touch that made me feel pampered and well taken care of. As we sat on the balcony and prepared to sleep, I couldn’t help but appreciate the attention to detail and the genuine care that went into making my stay so special.

Beyond its luxurious amenities and impeccable service, what truly sets the Emerson Spice Hotel apart is its rich history and cultural heritage. Housed within a beautifully restored merchant’s house dating back to the 19th century, the hotel seamlessly blends modern comforts with old-world charm. Everywhere you turn, you’re greeted with reminders of Zanzibar’s vibrant past, from the intricately carved doors to the ornate furnishings that adorn the common areas.

The Emerson Spice Hotel is also home to a hidden gem – its secret garden restaurant. Tucked away from the bustling streets of Stone Town, this enchanting oasis offers a tranquil escape where guests can dine amidst lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and savour the flavours of Zanzibar.

Of course, no stay at the Emerson Spice Hotel would be complete without indulging in breakfast at their rooftop restaurant. As I sat overlooking the historic streets of Stone Town, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the beauty that surrounded me. The spread was equally impressive, featuring a delicious array of coffee, fresh fruits, juice, eggs, and pancakes. It was a feast for the senses that left me feeling energised and ready to explore all that Zanzibar has to offer.

One of the most memorable experiences during any stay at the Emerson Spice Hotel would be indulging in their exquisite five-course seafood tasting menu, served on the rooftop overlooking the enchanting streets of Stone Town.

Each dish was expertly crafted to highlight the freshest flavours of the ocean. The menu showcased a symphony of seafood delights, from succulent grilled lobster to cinnamon scented tuna and rice tempura prawns, each bite bursting with the vibrant spices and aromas of Zanzibar. I enjoyed each course under the starlit sky, accompanied by the gentle sea breeze and the rhythmic sounds of the bustling city below. The five-course tasting menu is a must for anyone staying in Stone Town.

During my stay, I had the opportunity to explore Stone Town’s narrow alleyways and bustling markets, immersing myself in the sights, sounds, and flavours of this captivating destination. Whether wandering through the historic Forodhani Gardens or bargaining for treasures at the Darajani Market, each moment was filled with a sense of wonder and discovery.

As my time at the Emerson Spice Hotel came to an end, I found myself reluctant to leave this little slice of paradise. From its charming accommodations to its unparalleled hospitality, every aspect of my stay had exceeded my expectations. As I bid farewell to the staff who made me feel at home during my time here, I knew that Zanzibar and the Emerson Spice Hotel would forever hold a special place in my heart.
