The Ultimate Guide to Tweed for Men

Tweed has long had a fuddy-duddy reputation in the fashion world. Until recently, if you rocked up to a party in a tweed waistcoat you’d quickly be dubbed the grandfather of the group.

Well, that’s all about to change. Tweed was a hot trend at men’s LFW in January. The Great Gatsby is big news this season with 1920’s style reigning supreme.

Think debonair tailoring, think pocket watches, think pale suits, think boater hats – and most surprisingly of all – think tweed waistcoats, caps and jackets.

So, how do you wear this season’s must-have without looking like you’re off to the hunt?

Try The Less Is More Approach

Tweed is the equivalent of a statement colour pop. In small doses it can finish an outfit exquisitely, but refrain from going head to toe.

Choose a key jacket and team it with regular tapered jeans and boots for a contemporary rural look, or if you’re dressing to impress team a matching jacket and waistcoat with regular suit trousers, brogues and a shirt and tie.

Nail the vintage look: Swap the tie for a bow tie and add a pocket handkerchief.

Channel Dapper Vibes with Subtle Accessories

The flat cap is usually associated with that country bumpkin, jodhpur-wearing, popping to the farm shop for a rasher of bacon vibe. However celebrities like David Beckham have given the hat a new lease of life choosing to team it with a look more suited to city slickers.

Beckham is often spotted out and about in a flat cap and wears his with a coatigan, jeans and distressed boots or a leather jacket and trainers. It’s a simple way to give your style a smart yet practical update.

Take It All The Way With Double Tweed

Achieve the dapper gentleman look with a men’s tweed jacket and waistcoat combo paired with chinos or suit trousers. Go for a matchy-matchy option and remember to pair a light coloured shirt underneath to keep things subtle.

The addition of a tie and smart brogues will pass for a formal occasion but if you’re off to a more casual soiree then dark jeans and desert boots will cut it just nicely.

Will you be incorporating tweed into your wardrobe? The Edinburgh Woollen Mill is home to a quality range of authentic Harris Tweed menswear including slippers, flat caps, blazers and waistcoats. Browse and buy the latest collection.

Loving the pocket square addition to the tweed jacket. Gives it more of a flair.
