The Art Of The Pocket Square

Pocket squares have been seen as a formal accessory in the past, being worn only for the odd “posh occasion”. Infact, pocket squares offer a lot more to an outfit than a lot of people think, and this simple attention to detailing can make or break a look. Today at MFM, we’re going to be discussing the art of the pocket square, discussing how to implement them into your current wardrobe.

You need to remove that stigma that a pocket square is only for occasions, and should only be used within a blazer pocket. They’re labelled pocket squares and not blazer pocket squares for a reason… Pocket squares can easily be implemented into shirt pockets, jacket pockets and even trouser pockets, all adding something unique and different to a look. Here’s a collection of lookbooks for inspiration:

The two key things you need to remember with the pocket square is don’t limit wearing one only for occasions, and don’t only use the pocket square within a blazer pocket. Different folds can add different elements to a look, with a puff pocket fold adding more of a relaxed feel to a jacket or shirt, and a straight square fold adding more of a tailored, elegant element to a look. Use the pocket square wisely, and it’s going to compliment your look.

When deciding on what pocket squares to buy, opt for design, fabric and colour. When accessorising, you want to add something to a look and a dull pocket square isn’t going to achieve this. A paisley design or bright coloured pocket square will add something to a look, just make sure it compliments what you’re wearing. A silk pocket square allows you to offer a lightweight touch to a look, where as a cotton offers a more sturdy, tailored touch. My advice would be to mix up the textures depending on what you’re wearing at that current time, with a silk pocket square being used for more casual looks and cotton pocket squares being used for straighter folds and more elegant looks. Here’s some great pocket squares for men currently available on the market:
