There’s still a slight stigma behind male grooming, even though the industry is showing substantial growth year after year.
More and more men are now paying attention to grooming, but if you’re still not a convert we’re here to help.
Grooming isn’t about spending an hour in front of the mirror every day, and it isn’t about stepping out of your comfort zone to look after yourself. It’s, in fact, something you already do…
Every man has a grooming routine, whether it’s cleaning your teeth twice a day, flossing, applying aftershave, having a shower and spraying deodorant. This is all part of ‘grooming’ and it’s something (we hope) you’re doing right now.
The issue is although the above is fine and highly recommended, with the products available and the advice out there it really isn’t enough. So we’re here to show you what type of grooming you should be doing each morning, and each evening, to improve your overall appearance.
But before we jump into it, we want to make it clear that this isn’t going to add 30 minutes on to your morning and evening routine.
You also won’t need to think about it, as all we will be doing is adding some important grooming products in to your existing grooming routine. It’s easy… so there are no excuses.
If you don’t know already, the grooming industry is one of the fastest growing over the past few years. Men are finally starting to accept the fact it’s OK to pay attention to their appearance, and more and more grooming products are being developed and being bought.
For this article, we’re going to be keeping it simple. Using just 3 products and making sure each application doesn’t take a lot of time.
Personally I’d recommend choosing a brand/product and sticking with it. If you rotate from product to product it can take longer to see an effect.
For this simple skin care routine for men, we’ll be using these 3 products.
A good moisturiser will help make your skin softer and clearer. They increase the hydration of your skin and reduce evaporation. Find a moisturiser that works well with your skin and stick with it.
A Face Wash
Washing your face with £1 shower gel or soap doesn’t cut it if you’re looking to keep your skin clear and age well. A good face wash will help cleanse your skin and remove any of the dirt and grime built up throughout the day.
An Eye Cream
They say eye contact is the king of good body language, but making eye contact with tired looking eyes may tell a different story. A good eye cream can help with dark circles around your eyes alongside reducing puffiness.
The Routine: Morning
Remember, we’re not doing anything out of the ordinary here. All we’re doing is adding a selection of the above products to your typical, day to day grooming routine.
In the morning, it’s likely you wake up, wash, get changed and clean your teeth. Alongside this, we recommend just simply applying moisturiser alongside a small amount of the eye cream.
Washing your face in the morning is optional. Some men advise against it, some don’t, for me I wash my face in the morning as I often sometimes forget before bed. Depending on the product you choose, some also recommend cleaning your face twice a day.
When To Do It
The best time to do it is after you clean your teeth. It’s very likely you do this every morning, so just be consciously aware to wash your face, apply the eye cream and moisturiser every morning once you’ve finished brushing.
What To Do
Wet your face with warm water and use a nickel sized amount of face wash. Rub your hands together to create a lather and scrub your face. Target the areas that are likely to get greasy and areas where you tend to have breakouts and then rinse off with water.
Once your face is dry, using your ring finger, apply a small amount of eye cream around the bottom of your eyes. This is going to help reduce puffiness alongside your typical wrinkles or bags. By using your ring finger you’ll be able to apply less pressure, because the more pressure you use the more it’s going to cause irritation.
Then take a small amount of moisturiser and rub it into your hands (like you do when applying hair product). Gently apply this evenly across your face. Again if you use too much it’s going to have an adverse effect making your skin look greasy, so apply a small amount that just covers the whole of your face.
If You Have Time
The typical routine for men is ‘Cleanse, Tone & Moisturise’, so if you have time you could perform this each morning.
This would simply mean washing your face with a cleanser, spraying a Toner and then applying the eye cream and moisturiser.
We tend to recommend only cleansing and toning in the evenings though, but it really does depend on your skin and how bad it is.
The Routine: Evening
The morning routine is a walk in the park right? Clean your teeth, and then apply an eye cream and moisturiser. The addition is minor, it’s going to add about 30 seconds on to your morning but it’s going to have a positive effect.
The evening routine we’ve decided to apply a few more products. We find the morning is often a time when you’re in a rush, where as the evening is less hectic and often the best time for you to pay more attention.
When To Do It
Again, before you go to bed you’re going to probably clean your teeth. Therefore this is the best time to apply the products we’re about to recommend. If you shower in the evenings, use the cleanser within the shower while you wash.
What To Do
Cleanse using the face wash, and again just use a small amount. Squirt a pea sized amount of face wash in to the palm of your hands and then rub them together. The product will become soapy, and you’ll then want to apply this evenly around your face.
You can use a bit more force here, rubbing it into your skin. Pay attention to the nose area, alongside your cheeks and forehead. Leave the product on for about 30 seconds and then rinse off completely.
You’ll then want to dry your face ready for the Serum or Toner. Either spray the Toner across your face or gently apply a serum, using your hands gently rub it in.
Like in the morning, you want to then apply a small amount of the eye cream onto your eyes and then apply a moisturiser. You can use a different moisturiser here to what you used in the morning, something which aids night recovery or is purposely manufactured for sleep.
If You Have Time
There really is endless possibilities of what else you could do if you have time: exfoliating, shaving or beard maintenance, flossing, keeping your eyebrows trim and even cutting finger nails. Some you might already do, but keeping on top of it all will drastically improve your appearance.
If you want to do more than what we recommend here, head over to our grooming section for more advice.
Throughout The Day
As work then gets in the way, and stress alongside bad weather tries to adverse the effects your new grooming routine is having on your skin, you might want to start applying and maintaining throughout the day.
It really isn’t needed in most cases though, but throughout the day you could apply moisturiser, eye cream, and even use a toner to keep your skin fresh. Don’t overdo it though.
So there we have it, pretty simple right?
Just concentrate on applying a few additional products into your day to day routine and you’ll start to see improvements to your skin and your overall appearance.
Once this grooming ritual becomes unconsciously natural to you, start thinking about what else you could do to improve.
