As gentleman we need to start realising the importance of accessories and focusing on the finer details to our looks. It’s time to admit that women accessorise a lot better than us, and we need to catch up. Today we’re going to be talking about a formal accessory which can really transform a look, and that is of course the pocket square. Style starts with looking elegant, and creating individuality through finer detailing. The pocket square helps achieve this, as implementing a pocket square can add a touch of detailing your look may be screaming out for.

How To Wear A Pocket Square

There’s a variety of ways to wear a pocket square, and there’s two key elements. Firstly it’s how you fold the pocket square. There’s a variety of different folds which add something different to your look. For example a square fold will be more tailored, it’s more suited towards tailored formal looks. A puff fold is more casual, and can be implemented into casual, laid back looks. Here’s a video highlighting some of the key folds:

As you can see each fold offers a different approach. The most popular fold is the puff pocket, it works for casual looks but can also add a touch of elegance to formal attire. The other element to consider when wearing a pocket square is where to wear it? The common choice is to obviously add the pocket square to your breast, blazer pocket. But there’s a variety of other garments you can wear the pocket square with to add uniqueness. For example: Pocket squares work well inside a shirt pocket, in the back pocket of chinos, a jacket pocket and even in your blazer side pocket. This variation again offers uniqueness, and mixes things up slightly. Here’s a lookbook of guys wearing pocket squares stylishly:

What Pocket Square?

As with all accessories, you need to focus on what it’s going to bring to the look. If your look is quite neutral and needs spicing up, a pocket square with a unique print or colour will brighten up a look. On the other hand, plain colours like white, navy, and black are preferred for formal attire and can be used to blend in with a look. It’s all about deciding whether you want to create a statement with your pocket square, or use it to add a subtle touch. Prints are extremely popular this coming season so adding a printed pocket square is a great choice. If creating a statement isn’t for you go for a simple white, cotton pocket square which can be used for formal outings.

So what’s your thoughts on the pocket square? How many do you own and how do you wear them?
