2 Ways To Wear The Knitted Tie
When opting for a tie, silk and polyester isn’t always the best look to go for. With more and more guys opting for a knitted tie, we wanted to highlight some key ways to wear them.
Knitted ties were common as part of the sporty British look in the 1930s, and became popular in the US with lounging movie stars. In the 60s and 70s they were customary uniform for American prep school students, and part of the fashion for teachers and professors. They’re a great option if you want to add texture and needed detailing to a look. Here are a few tips on how to achieve the right balance with your outfit, and a couple of themes to think about too.
The Classic Prep Look
Ties have always been part of this style, but it’s only recently that knitted ties became part of the equation again. They went out of fashion in the late eighties, when they were associated with novelty trends. Today though you can find a wide range of high quality silk and wool knitted ties which will suit your needs. The crinkled borders of this sleeveless tie look great against a shirt, giving texture to your look. Wear bold, striped patterns with a pale suit to make a feature of them, and don’t forget to match them with a fashionable pocket square. If you’re going to wear a colourful shirt, consider a more subtle colour for your tie, or a solid pattern, as if will stand out more effectively.
The Professorial Look
There are some great options out there if you want to add an air of mature refinement to your prep look. The professorial style hinges around classic jackets with elbow patches, or knitted cardigans over shirts. Knitted ties compliment this style perfectly. Choose an option with a blunt tip and a wide shape to cement the image of confidence and authority. Either wool or silk options are excellent – they’re both comfortable, and give a similar, rustic appeal. Silk ties tend to have a pleasant crisp feel, so if you enjoy a textured tie this is a great choice. Alternatively, woollen options are warm in the winter months, so you can look like a gentleman and feel cosy too.
